What is the history of Absa Karaglen

Absa Karaglen is a shopping centre located in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. The centre opened in April 2004 and is owned and managed by the Absa Group. It comprises approximately 41,000m² of retail space and is anchored by Absa Bank, Checkers, Edgars, Game, Pick n Pay, Ster-Kinekor and Woolworths.

The site on which Absa Karaglen is built was originally a farm called Klipfontein, which was owned by the late Mr JH ( Hansie ) Human. The farmhouse, which still stands today and is known as the “ old House”, was built in 1912. In 1960, the farm was subdivided and sold as smallholdings.

In the early 1980s, the owners of the smallholdings adjacent to Old Klipfontein Road approached Midrand Estates (Pty) Ltd with a view to selling their properties for development. Midrand Estates subsequently applied for rezoning from agricultural to residential and business 2. This application was approved by the Randburg Town Council in September 1983.

In October 1983, Midrand Estates appointed architects Boogertman & Partners to design a shopping centre on the site. The shopping centre was originally known as Klipfontein Shopping Centre. However, due to changes in the ownership of the property, the name was changed to Absa Karaglen Shopping Centre.

Construction of the shopping centre commenced in March 2002 and was completed in April 2004. The total cost of the development was approximately R250 million.
